Term 4
Visit from a Robot
On Tuesday 31st October, we were lucky enough to have a robot from Noel Lemming come to visit us. We had an exciting dance party with the robot dancing with us, which we got to programme him to do.
Term 3
Duffy Role Model Assembly
This week, we were a wee bit spoilt with the visit of Mary Kippenberger and Peter Charlton-Jones for our Duffy Role Models Assembly. They shared three stories and asked a range of teachers and students to partake in acting out the stories. It was a great treat to have after production and provided a lot of humour. Check out some of the photo's and the video of the teachers joining in as bears doing the Hokie Tokie.

Production
Last Thursday and Wednesday, there was production. On Wednesday in the school hall earlier in the term, some Ferns students went to Kapa Haka, and the rest in Room 19 stayed in class and started learning the new song for production (Aotearoa). The next day, Miss Andersen asked the class who wanted to speak in the production and I put my hand up. We did mini auditions and decided who would be one of the 9 shoppers. The 9 shoppers were... Luke, Vinnie, Tayzen, me, DK, Cameron, Kaleb, Kasey and Joel. We practised and practised until it was last Wednesday where the whole school performed inside the hall at night. I had butterflies in my stomach as I waited to go on stage. Finally we were on. Me, Luke and Tayzen has to rush to our side. After, when the main characters DP63 (Telson), Sam (Aimee), Joe (Makayla), Bill (Hugo) and Savannah, but I don't know who she was in the play. When they were in the time machine and the lights changed colour, there was a time machine sound and the shoppers went on stage as quick as a cheetah until it stopped. Suddenly, the main characters sat down and we said our lines in order. After Joel's line, we said as a group "Land of the Long White Cloud". Next we took a step back and we sang Aotearoa the English Version and the rest of the class joined in on stage. After, the whole school came on and joined us. We ended up having 3 production days. The last production was... on my birthday. I had a big smile. It was so exciting!

Colour Poems
We have been writing colour poems in writing time using our senses. Our biggest focus has been on using adjectives to describe and paint a picture. Check out the poems we came up with as a group!

Big Day Out
On Thursday the 10th of August, the whole school piled in buses and made their way down to Arena Manawatu for our annual Big Day Out. There were a huge range of games that we played from Rob the Nest, to Seaweed, to basketball and so on! We all had a tonne of fun and were shattered at the end of the day. The highlight for us all was the house tug of war challenge. Some of us were lucky enough to be apart of this, while the rest of us encouraged and cheered everyone on. Bring on Big Day Out in 2018!!!!

Science Fun
For writing this term, we have started learning how to write instructions and the importance of writing the steps in order and with detail. We have had fun learning this through Science experiments.
As our topic this term is all about colour and emotions, we have done lots of colour experiments and been scientists to observe what happened. We we're very excited to see the amazing rainbow that was made when you put skittles in water. We discovered through experimentation that the skittles loose their colour and turn white. When we tap and bang the water container, the skittles regain a small amount of colour. With the creeping colours experiment, we were excited to see after a weekend that the paper towels we put in the dye had soaked up all the colours and mixed together to make new colours. We can't wait to see what experiments we do next week!

Science Fun with Buddy Class
On Tuesday in buddy class, we had a challenge... get the light and buzzer working using an electrical current. The problem was, the electrical current had to go through the playdough and we couldn't hook it straight onto the battery. Some of us were lucky enough to get these working, while others struggled. A couple of us began experimenting without the playdough and created an electrical current from the battery through both the light and buzzer.
Getting Creative
Wow! What a huge amount of rubbish! We watched this video this week at looks at all the problems this has on our environment around us. In the video, it talks about how chemicals etc leak into the ocean and water around us. We were very horrified to think this is happening as all our poor water animals are suffering, and some even dying. Another thing that happens on this island, is the burning of rubbish to make way for new rubbish. We couldn't believe that people go and burn all the rubbish and pollute the air. The poor people that have to live near that island.
So this week, we have been looking at a range of ways to eliminate rubbish in the landfill by recycling a range of materials to make new creations rather than throwing everything away! Check out some of the cool stuff we have made out of boxes, old Cotton reels, a video camera and more. If you have anything you can bring in for us to use (or electronic to pull apart then reuse) we would love to have them :)

What's in the School Garden?
Room 19 went for a visit to the garden. On our journey we learnt lots about the garden and the different things you can grow in there. We analysed the worm farm and found out we must put newspaper on the top to keep the worms wet. We even got to try peas straight from the garden. Many thought they were delicious, but some of us didn’t fancy them at all!
Te Reo Maori
Our challenge next week...In Room 19 this week we have had a focus on learning the days of the week in Maori. To help us, we found this catchy song. We sing it everyday and just love it! Our challenge next week... Months of the Year!
Room 19 Buddy Class- Science Fun
On Tuesday 2 May, we gathered as a buddy class to explore the area of ‘Planet Earth and Beyond’. We began by exploring a natural feature of Earth; fossil rocks. We were excited to learn that in these rocks were a large number of shells from all layers of the Earth. Many thought they were “heavy” and some stated that they were “solid and would be hard to break”.
After analysing the make-up of Earth and all its layers, we looked at tectonic plates. We discovered that New Zealand “sits on the edge of two tectonic plates, meaning that we have lots of bigger earthquakes compared to other countries”. Following this concept of tectonic plates, we led onto an investigation of the effect a large earthquake can have on buildings; not just the damage of the shake itself, but actually the impact liquefaction has on buildings. Many were surprised to learn that liquefaction “causes water to rise to the top, and the building sinks into the ground”. Others made comment around the feelings people must feel when this happens: “It must be very frightening when being in the house when it sinks. I’d be terrified” To end our discoveries, we had a go at making our own fossil impressions with the use of Plaster of Paris and shells. We can’t wait to see how they turn out! |
