Duffy Assembly and getting our Duffy Books
On Thursday, all of the children at Roslyn School walked to the hall ready for the Duffy assembly. Mary Kippenberger was our Role Model who came to speak to the school. She is a storyteller and she put on a fantastic show. All of the children were laughing and they all had a great time. At the end of the assembly all the classes received their boxes of Duffy books and we went back to class ready to see what books we had each got.
Science - Walking Water Experiment
This week, Room 13 used their observing skills and became Scientists! We discussed what makes a Fair Test and it was interesting to hear what they children thought. We then predicted what would happen to kitchen towel if we rolled it up and put it in glasses of water. Lots of the children thought it would soak up the water. So we put red, blue and yellow food colouring in 3 glasses to show the kitchen towel absorbing the water and we observed the colours 'walking' across the kitchen towel! When the colours met, they even mixed and created secondary colours. We were all amazed!
We also had the opportunity to go out on the playground on Friday afternoon and develop skills like balancing, climbing, sliding and swinging. Lots of fun was had!
Another fantastic week from Room 13 with lots of learning taking place. Well done Room 13!

All of the school were lucky enough to have the Turbo's visit on Tuesday morning because Roslyn School have adopted some Turbo's! Hunter and Louis spoke to the whole school about being a Turbo, what training they do and how they need to work hard to play their very best. Lots of children in Room 13 wore green so got to have a photo with them. Neat to have great role models like Hunter and Louis coming into the school and showing our children that you can achieve anything you put your mind to!
We have been continuing with our Inquiry - What colour do you feel? All of the children in Room 13 have really been discussing different emotions we feel and they have been putting these amazing feeling words into their writing. Well done Room 13!
Throughout the week, Room 13 has been taking part in regular practices for our School Production. They have been really showing PRIDE during these times and they have been singing up loud and proud!
Well done Room 13 - yet another week where you all have completely blown my socks off!

Birthday Cake in Room 13!
Blaze had his birthday and surprised the whole class with a fabulous (and delicious) chocolate cake to share for his 7th birthday! Room 13 were very spoilt!
Room 13 have had yet another fantastic week at school. On Monday morning, all of the Year 3 children walked to the hall and were involved in lots of fun maths problems that really challenged them. All of the children came back buzzing and excited about what they had been doing. Room 13 were lucky to be able to also watch Duffy Theatre on Monday afternoon with the rest of the school and the children learnt lots of things about Global Warming. Lots of children in Room 13 were sprayed with water because they were sitting right in the front row! This sparked a lot of discussion throughout the week about what Global Warming is and the children have done some fantastic recounts for their writing about the Duffy Assembly.
Room 13 and Room 14 have been busy practising for School Production and we even had our first practise with the senior children. We are sounding amazing!
Many of the children and myself have been quite unwell these last few weeks and the class have just really been so supportive towards one another. PRIDE has been talked about loads and we have really been trying hard to treat each other like we want to be treated. Well done Room 13. Keep up the fantastic work!
P R I D E
Welcome back to Term 3! What a busy start to the term for Room 13! All of the children came back so positive and ready for learning. Sounds like many of the children had a fantastic break.
Through the week, Room 13 and Room 14 did some Science Experiments. The first experiment was where the children had to smell a bottle of liquid and predict what they thought it might be before they got to taste it and see if they were right. There were definitely a mixture of screwed up faces and lots of excitement! The next experiment we did was put skittles into an ice cream container of water. We all observed what was going on and we noticed that the skittles lost their colour and also started dissolving in the water. After an hour of so, all of the skittles had dissolved. We were all so amazed! The final experiment we did really was impressive. We put some milk in the bottom of ice cream containers before putting drops of yellow, blue and red food colouring in the corners. We then added a drop of dishwashing liquid in the middle and watched as the colours all began swirling around and mixing. It generated lots of talk around primary colours and what happens when these colours are mixed together. Lots of fun had by all and such amazing discussions from all of the children.
On Friday, Room 13 hosted the school assembly with our buddy class Room 7. All of the children did really well and some of the children even had a speaking role infront of the whole school.
After the whole school assembly, all of the Ferns got on the buses and went to the Globe Theatre to watch a ballet of Beautrix Potter. It was such a neat performance and all of the Ferns had a neat time. Such a busy week for Room 13 and I know all of the children (and the teacher) were ready for some rest and relaxation over the weekend!

Matariki - The Seven Stars!
Room 13 have been busy learning about Matariki this week. We read the story 'The Star Fishes' and did some amazing writing around this. The children even acted the story out and really enjoyed taking on the characters. All of the children have been talking about how we can think of others more during Matariki and have been suggesting great ways they are going to try and do this. Keep up the amazing work Room 13.
Room 13 have had another fabulous week! We have been focusing on showing 'Excellence' in all learning areas at school. All of the children brainstormed what areas are learning areas in our school for children in our class and we came up with lots! The children came up with some amazing ideas for how we can show Excellence in all of these learning areas. We all believe we need to be proud of all our work, always try our best and to have an 'I can' attitude so even when things get tricky we keep on trying. During PB4L this week, we watched 'Giraffes Can't Dance' on You Tube and looked at how Gerald the Giraffe kept telling himself 'I can't do it'! Then his attitude changed and he had an 'I can' attitude and he achieved things he didn't think he could achieve. Room 13 have been showing just how amazing they are and have been really persevering in their learning and achieving such wonderful things. Keep up the great learning guys!
Room 13 give it their all when hosting the Team Assembly!
What a week it has been! Although it was a 4 day week, we squeezed so much learning in and the children have been very busy! Lots of children have gone up levels in Reading and they have made huge progress in Writing. Keep up the amazing work Room 13!
Through the week, we were lucky to get a taster session from the Zirka Circus and wow those boys were amazing! All of the children were so focussed watching them do flips and do some amazing tricks! They also participated in the School Powhiri for Principal Ma who is a Principal of a very large school in China and were so friendly towards him when he came to see us in our classroom. I think he was very impressed with us!
On Friday, we hosted our Team Assembly and the children did themselves proud. All of children who had a speaking part did so confidently and were so enthusiastic when presenting their part. Well done Room 13!

Reusing - Using something again
Room 13 have been carrying on with their Inquiry focus 'Being a Change Maker'. The children continued working with their milk bottle and making it into something new which has led into reusing something again. There has been lots of thought put into their creations and the class has been buzzing with excitement as they got to paint their creations!
Music and Milk Bottles
All of the children have had another fun-filled week at school! We have been busy looking at how we can reuse milk bottles and we have all started making something out of a milk bottle! They are already looking pretty impressive!
Room 13 did themselves proud at the School Cross-Country on Thursday. The muddy ground and big puddles of water didn't stop all of the children running and each of the children in Room 13 was a winner because they all tried their very best! It was neat to see the students encouraging one another in the race. Well done guys!
On Friday afternoon, Room 13 was really lucky to be able to spend some time in the music room with Mr O'H learning the xylophone and keyboard...definitely some budding musicians in the making! They all got to have a go playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on both the keyboard and xylophone and lots of fun was had.

What's been happening in Room 13?
It has been another very busy week in Room 13. We have been looking at 'Reusing' and what that means. Many of the children already reuse things at home and it was really interesting to discuss lots of ways that we can reuse things rather than put them in the rubbish. We even watched a clip on YouTube of Henderson Island and how much rubbish is going onto this Island each day. The children were amazed at how the rubbish is ruining the environment and also how it is affecting our wildlife.
Here are some examples of our writing that we did around 'Reusing'.
Reusing
After we have finished with our plastic vitamin container we could reuse it by making it into a money box.
When we have emptied the milk out of the milk container, we could reuse it by making it into a bird feeder.
When we have finished reading our magazines, we could read them all over again and we could also cut out the pictures and make something with them.
We could reuse our food scraps and put them in the compost.
After we have finished with our clothes and shoes, we could have a garage sale so the clothes and shoes could be reused.
We could even reuse our glass bottles and jars by putting homemade sauce in them.
Keep up the fabulous work Room 13. You are all flying high in your learning!

Room 13 Visits the School Worm Garden!
Room 13 children have had another great week at school and lots of great learning has been going on.
On Tuesday, we looked at how we can reduce rubbish in our lunchboxes. We even worked out that buying 1 big bag of chippies is far cheaper than buying a multi-bag of chips and it also reduces our rubbish.
All of the children were very excited on Wednesday to be visiting the school garden. Jake showed us the school worm garden and explained how worms help the environment. The children learnt that Tiger worms really like apples and feijoa skins so this has been a discussion through the week as the children finish their fruit in class. They even got to see worm wee! Jake told the children that he mixes this with water and he uses it to fertilise the garden. Later on, Jake picked each of the children a bean and they got to try it – some thought it was delicious while others were not so impressed! A great experience had by all and this has given the children some great language for their writing.
On Friday we all had a wonderful day celebrating Wonder Woman Day. Thank you to all the amazing Wonder Women that came and celebrated with us!

Room 13 - Planting Herbs
All of the children in Room 13 have started the term with such a positive attitude to learning. They have all settled back into routine and are already doing some amazing learning!
Our Inquiry this term is ‘Agents of Change’. On Monday, Room 13 discussed how plants help to give us oxygen and help to make our air cleaner. So we decided to plant some herbs in our class planter box as a way of being a 'change maker'. All the children got to plant sage, parsley, chives or thyme. Each day the children have been checking on the herbs to see how they are growing. Some children even brought herbs that they have at home. We learnt lots of ways that herbs can be used like in medicines, soaps, perfumes and creams and also for flavouring food.
We have also started looking at Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in our class. It is neat to hear that the children have been busy searching at home for products that have the recycling sign on them. Some children even brought some to school and this has added to lots of discussions around rubbish. We have been collecting our rubbish each day and sorting it into glad wrap, chippie wrappers, muesli bar wrappers, yoghurt containers and other types of rubbish - we even thought we were starting a landfill in our class!
Keep up the super work Room 13! We are in for an exciting term!
